Introduction to the special issue on multiword expressions: Having a crack at a hard nut
نویسندگان
چکیده
Multiword expressions are an integral part of language. Their heterogeneous characteristics have proved a challenge to both linguistic and computational analysis. Their importance to language technology has long been recognised. In this special issue we include ten papers which propose a variety of approaches for finding and handling these expressions, both for building general purpose lexical resources and in the context of specific applications. In this introduction we give a brief summary of what multiword expressions are, the challenges that they pose and some open areas of research. We then highlight the contributions that the ten papers make to these areas. Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 9 March 2005

In the vibration of a cracked structure with small amplitude oscillations, the crack necessarily is not fully open or fully closed. Therefore, in order to provide a realistic model for the crack, one should relate the stiffness and damping at the crack location to the amount of the opening of the crack. In this study, a continuous model for vibration of a beam with a fatigue crack under low amp...
متن کاملModelling of Crack Growth Using a New Fracture Criteria Based Peridynamics
Peridynamics (PD) is a nonlocal continuum theory based on integro-differential equations without spatial derivatives. The elongation fracture criterion is implicitly incorporated in the PD theory, and fracture is a natural outcome of the simulation. On the other hand, a new fracture criterion based on the crack opening displacement combined with peridynamic (PD-COD) is proposed. When the relati...
متن کاملSTRESS INTENSITY FACTORS FOR AN INTERIOR GRIFFITH CRACK OPENED BY HEATED WEDGE IN A STRIP WHOSE EDGES ARE NORMAL TO CRACK AXIS
After second world war, we have seen a very rapid development of Thermoelasticity stimulated by various engineering sciences. As we know, structures behave in different fashion under climate variation and the most responsible factor for these variations is heat which falls through and causes deformation of the body. A considerable progress in the field of aircraft and machine structures, mainly...
متن کاملBaldwin, Timothy (2005) The Deep Lexical Acquisition of English Verb-particle Constructions, Computer Speech and Language, Special Issue on Multiword Expressions, Volume 19, Issue 4, pp. 398-414
This paper proposes a range of techniques for extracting English verb–particle constructions from raw text corpora, complete with valence information. We propose four basic methods, based on the output of a POS tagger, chunker, chunk grammar and dependency parser, respectively. We then present a combined classifier which we show to consolidate the strengths of the component methods.
متن کاملUchiyama, Kiyoko, Timothy Baldwin and Shun Ishizaki (2005) Disambiguating Japanese Compound Verbs, Computer Speech and Language, Special Issue on Multiword Expressions, Volume 19, Issue 4, pp. 497-512
The purpose of this study is to disambiguate Japanese compound verbs (JCVs) using two methods: (1) a statistical sense discrimination method based on verbcombinatoric information, which feeds into a first-sense statistical sense disambiguation method, and (2) a manual rule-based sense disambiguation method which draws on argument structure and verb semantics. In evaluation, we found that the ru...
